Physical Chemistry
This unit gives an overview of physical chemistry, the study of the
forces that govern chemical processes. As the name implies, physical
chemistry is a cross between physics and chemistry. To be successful at
this subject, you will need to have good algebra skills. Review the
material in the "Prep Chem" course outlines, particularly the
measurement section, if you have not
already done so.
- Thermodynamics, Part 1: Calorimetery;
this section discusses the components of internal energy, explains
the difference between heat and temperature, and describes
calorimetery experiments.
- Thermodynamics, Part 2: the Laws of Thermodynamics; this section
discusses the thermodynamic state functions and the laws of
thermodynamics.
- Chemical Kinetics; this section discusses reaction rates and how
to use a rate law to determine concentrations of reactants as a
function of time.
- Chemical Equilibrium, Part 1; this section introduces the
concepts of chemical equilibrium as illustrated by mixtures of
gases.
